The Background
The City of Newark Department of Health manages critical public health campaigns focused on community awareness, disease prevention, and behavior change. Their mission requires clear, trusted communication channels that reach residents across languages, literacy levels, and devices.
The Problem
Residents needed accessible, trustworthy information presented clearly and consistently across mobile and desktop. Legacy health information was scattered, hard to find, and didn't reach vulnerable populations effectively. The department required a modern, user-friendly platform that could support multiple health initiatives and adapt quickly to emerging public health needs.
Our Solutions
We developed behavior-change-focused campaign messaging and a mobile-first microsite to support health awareness and prevention:
Campaign Messaging & Strategy:
- Applied evidence-based behavior-change frameworks grounded in public health research
- Crafted clear, direct messaging that overcomes misconceptions and builds trust in health institutions
- Developed resources for crisis communication and ongoing awareness campaigns addressing vaccination, disease prevention, and wellness
- Created multilingual support to reach underserved communities in Newark
UX & Microsite Design:
- Designed mobile-first to meet residents where they are—the majority access health information on smartphones
- Built clear content hierarchy with scannable sections for busy residents seeking immediate answers
- Implemented accessible design patterns (large text, high contrast, plain language) for residents with varying literacy levels
- Created intuitive workflows for finding information, requesting resources, and connecting with health programs
Behavior Change Design:
- Applied proven design patterns to encourage action: clear calls-to-action, social proof, trustworthy sources, and easy next steps
- Integrated testimonials and success stories from trusted community members to build confidence
- Designed for easy sharing—residents should feel motivated to share health resources with family and friends
The Results
The campaign platform became a trusted resource for Newark residents:
- Accessible, trusted health resources residents rely on for critical information
- Focused on crisis + awareness communications—ready to support public health emergencies and prevention campaigns
- Citywide resident reach across all neighborhoods and demographics
- Mobile-optimized experience supporting residents searching for health answers on smartphones
- Community partnerships—health providers and community organizations reference the microsite in their own communications
